Gegensätze: obwohl & trotzdem

When something happens against expectations, German has a pair:
- obwohl (although) starts a Nebensatz — verb at the end: Obwohl die Sendung spät kommt, sehe ich sie jeden Abend.
- trotzdem (still, nevertheless) is an adverb in position 1 — verb next: Die Sendung kommt spät, trotzdem sehe ich sie jeden Abend.
Same idea, two word orders: exactly the pattern of weil vs. deshalb.
Tabelle
| Konnektor | Typ | Beispiel |
|---|---|---|
| obwohl | Nebensatz, Verb am Ende | Ich lese die Zeitung, obwohl sie teuer ist. |
| trotzdem | Position 1, Verb danach | Die Zeitung ist teuer, trotzdem lese ich sie. |
| weil | Nebensatz (Grund) | Ich lese die Zeitung, weil sie gut ist. |
| deshalb | Position 1 (Folge) | Die Zeitung ist gut, deshalb lese ich sie. |
Tipp
trotz + Genitiv from Unit 2 belongs to the same family: trotz der vielen Werbung means the same as obwohl es viel Werbung gibt.
