Relativsätze: der, die, das

Relativsätze: der, die, das

A Relativsatz describes a noun with a whole clause, which is perfect for apartment ads and for saying what you want:

  • Ich suche eine Wohnung, die einen Balkon hat.
  • Das ist der Mietvertrag, den du unterschreiben musst.

The relative pronoun takes its gender and number from the noun, and its case from its job inside the relative clause. A comma opens the clause and the conjugated verb goes to the end.

Table

maskulin neutral feminin Plural
Nominativ der das die die
Akkusativ den das die die
Dativ dem dem der denen

Tip

The relative pronoun looks like the definite article, with one exception: the Dativ plural is denen, not den.
