sollte: Vergangenheit oder Ratschlag?

sollte has two jobs, and both look exactly the same:

• Präteritum (was supposed to): Gestern sollte ich zur Kontrolle kommen.
• Konjunktiv II (should, as advice): Du solltest mal zum Arzt gehen.

The context tells you which: a past time phrase or a past story points to the Präteritum; advice about now or later is the Konjunktiv II.
