Ehrenamt: sich engagieren
Many people in Germany and Austria do volunteer work (das Ehrenamt, -“er), from the sports club to the food bank. The words around it:
- sich engagieren für + Akkusativ — to get involved in, to be active for
- ehrenamtlich — voluntary, unpaid: ehrenamtlich arbeiten
- der Verein, -e — the club, the association
- das Mitglied, -er — the member

Tip
A volunteer is ein Freiwilliger or eine Freiwillige: an adjective used as a noun, like der Bekannte in Unit 8.
