One question decides: is the subject the same in both parts?

• same subject → um … zu (damit is possible too): Ich spare, um ein Auto zu kaufen.
• different subject → only damit: Ich spare, damit meine Tochter studieren kann.

Trap: um … zu can’t bring in a new subject. Ich helfe ihm, damit er schneller fertig ist.
