als oder wenn?
Both mean “when”, and both send the verb to the end. The choice depends on how often and when:
- als — one event or one period in the past: Als ich zehn war, sind wir umgezogen.
- wenn — repeated in the past (whenever): Wenn ich Oma besuchte, backte sie Kuchen.
- wenn — present and future: Wenn ich in Rente bin, reise ich viel.
If you can say jedes Mal, wenn (every time), it’s wenn.

Tip
A whole period counts as one time: Als ich ein Kind war … — your childhood happened once, so als.
