Perfekt oder Präteritum?

Perfekt oder Präteritum?

Both tenses describe the past. Which one you use is mostly a question of style:

  • speaking and chat messages: mostly Perfekt — Ich bin nach Wien gezogen.
  • written stories, news, blogs: often Präteritum — Ich zog nach Wien.
  • sein, haben, modal verbs: Präteritum in both — Ich war müde.

In the friend e-mail both work, and mixing them is normal — as long as each form is correct.

Tip

Perfekt review: most verbs take haben; verbs of movement and change (gehen, fahren, kommen, umziehen, werden) take sein, and so do bleiben and sein. Ich bin geblieben, ich bin geworden.
