Der Genitiv

The Genitiv shows whose something is or what it belongs to. You’ll meet it all the time in leases, house rules and letters:
- das Ende des Monats — the end of the month
- die Wohnung meiner Nachbarin — my neighbor’s apartment
- der Brief meines Vermieters — my landlord’s letter
Masculine and neuter: des / eines / meines + -s or -es on the noun. Feminine and plural: der / einer / meiner, with no ending on the noun.
Table
| maskulin | neutral | feminin | Plural | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| bestimmt | des Vermieters | des Hauses | der Wohnung | der Mieter |
| unbestimmt | eines Vermieters | eines Hauses | einer Wohnung | — |
| Possessiv | meines Vermieters | meines Hauses | meiner Wohnung | meiner Eltern |
Tip
The Genitiv comes after the noun it describes: die Tür des Kellers. In speech people often say von + Dativ instead; in letters, contracts and house rules you'll read the Genitiv.
