At work, the Konjunktiv II turns a request into a polite one:

• Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?
• Würden Sie das bitte noch einmal erklären?
• Dürfte ich kurz stören?
• Hätten Sie einen Moment Zeit?

Kannst du …? is fine with friends; with your boss or a customer, Könnten Sie …? sounds much better.
