aber oder sondern?

Both translate as “but”, but they do different jobs:

• sondern corrects a negation (but rather): Ich lese die Zeitung nicht auf Papier, sondern online.
• aber adds a contrast: Die App ist kostenlos, aber sie hat viel Werbung.

Rule of thumb: nicht or kein in the first half and a correction in the second → sondern. Both stand at position 0.
