wegen, trotz, während, statt
Four prepositions take the Genitiv in written German, and they’re exactly the words of complaints and house rules:
- wegen (because of): wegen des Lärms
- trotz (despite): trotz der Hausordnung
- während (during): während der Ruhezeit
- statt (instead of): statt eines Balkons
In speech you’ll often hear wegen dem Lärm. In your formal e-mail, use the Genitiv.

Tipp
Spoken German often uses the Dativ after wegen and trotz (wegen dem Lärm). That's normal in conversation, but in Schreiben the Genitiv makes the better impression.
